Star Wars Cosplay Portraits on Arabia Mountain // Nick & Colleen

This Star Wars cosplay session was the fourth time I’ve photographed this couple. But it absolutely will not be the last! Nick and Colleen are two INCREDIBLY talented human beings with an amazing amount of passion for their fandoms and for artistic creation. Not only that, but they’re just a ridiculous blast to hang out with. For this session, we were focusing on Star Wars cosplay. Nick and Colleen chose the characters of Luke Skywalker & Rey and their relationship together. We quickly decided on Arabia Mountain for our session. Arabia Mountain has such an otherworldly nature of it and, of course, that stunning view from the top.

Planning a Star Wars Cosplay Session

The way I build and plan cosplay sessions is a departure from how I plan a normal couple’s session because there are extra characters to consider and we’re telling their story, {with a little of yours as well}, so I focus on what would make sense for the character. Location, lighting, lens choice: every aspect is specifically chosen to achieve the look I’m going for. This look is based on the style and personality of the characters you’ve chosen to embody.

I work in a blend with the poses and prompts, as well. Though I always work to create a comfortable and natural environment at my sessions, my cosplay photography will be a little more posed. It has to be a bit more specific than my portrait photography. Sometimes there are specific shots we’re working towards, or even just feelings we’re looking to evoke. I always want to know what drew you to these characters. It can be useful to understand what you have in common with them, and how you’re different, too.
